Joe Cheng and Winston Chang at the Appsilon Shiny Conference

We’re thrilled to announce that Joe Cheng and Winston Chang will be joining the 2022 Appsilon Shiny Conference as panelists. They’ll join Diane Beldame from ThinkR and Appsilon’s CEO, Filip Stachura. Join the conversation with a live panel moderated by Eric Nantz. 

Ours is an open-source community and what better way to exhibit open source values than with a public panel. Don’t worry, we’ll have a list of questions to help facilitate the conversation, but we’d like to keep it as organic as possible. This is an opportunity for you – a member of the community – to engage directly with the Shiny team. Chat with the authors, address any burning questions, and see what RStudio has in store for the future.

Already have a question you’d like to ask? You can submit your question(s) to Joe and Winston before the conference. You can also raise your R or Shiny-related question(s) during the live event by typing in the chat or by adding to the slido link above. We’ll do our best to address everyone’s questions within the allotted time.

Panelists

If you’re new to the Shiny community, welcome! You may not know who Joe and Winston are yet, but they’re important names to remember. 

Chances are, if you google the word “shiny”, you’ll run across a treasure trove of blogs, conference videos, and tutorials from these two. They’ve been leading the R community at large to transform analyses into interactive web apps for the past decade. Their achievements are nothing short of amazing and they continue to push the boundaries of data visualization in R.

Shiny continues to transform the way individuals, researchers, and enterprise teams share their data stories. And as the Shiny dev team continues to grow the Shiny ecosystem, the Shiny community continues to find creative ways to showcase its power.

RStudio – Shiny Team

Joe Cheng, CTO at RStudio, is the original creator of the Shiny web framework. Joe and his team fundamentally changed how R users share data insights. Without his contributions to open source and the R community, data storytelling in R would be a lot less engaging.

From Shiny’s first introduction back in 2012 to its ascension as a widely popular package used across the globe – Joe and the Shiny team at RStudio have been leading the way in open-source R programming.

Winston Chang, Software Engineer at RStudio, is an author of Shiny and numerous R packages including later, profvis, ggvis, shinythemes, sessioninfo, shinytest, etc.! Winston is also the author of the R Graphics Cookbook – an R ‘recipe’ book for handling common data visualization tasks in R.

Appsilon

Filip Stachura, CEO and Co-founder of Appsilon, is a Software Engineer and has led Appsilon to become a global leader in R Shiny for enterprises. Appsilon was the first organization to demonstrate how to successfully scale Shiny applications beyond 700 users. Filip and the team at Appsilon have continued to pioneer unique R/Shiny solutions, open-source packages, and machine learning products.

Panel Moderators

Eric Nantz, creator and host of the R-Podcast, is a statistician in life sciences and an experienced R user. He’s turned his enjoyment of R and Shiny into a successful R-educational youtube channel, Shiny Developer Series. Eric has interviewed dozens of influential leaders in the R and Shiny world. He’s got a unique perspective on how the Shiny ecosystem has evolved and will help facilitate a meaningful conversation for all levels of Shiny users. 

2022 Appsilon Shiny Conference

We’re big on Shiny at Appsilon, and we want to help the Shiny Community grow. That means connecting those around us and providing an inclusive platform to share and learn – together. With the addition of a live panel, we hope to give attendees a more direct line to the RStudio Shiny team. We believe that providing direct lines of communication creates better opportunities for honest, meaningful conversations. It’s also a great way to shed the formalities of presentations and jumpstart a dialogue. 

Conference Goals

The Appsilon Shiny Conference has three goals:

1. Showcase recent advancements in R Shiny technology such as open-source packages, Shiny interoperability, and commercial applications.
2. Create a shared space for the diverse global community of Shiny developers to learn, network, and collaborate.
3. Provide a platform for Shiny community members to share their open-source packages and Shiny applications.

Accessibility

We will make our best effort to uphold the accessibility standards from useR 2021. This includes:

• All recorded content and video uploads will be captioned.
• Live content will be captioned where possible.
• We will choose accessible platforms for conference hosting when possible.
• Presentations will be constructed with screen reading compatibility in mind.
